“Operation Firefly” is GamerGate’s latest attempt at sustaining and proliferating their hate campaign. Described on 8chan with typical self-aggrandizing, pseudomilitary bluster (“We’re going into Normandy and we need your help”), GamerGate supporters intend to create Tumblr accounts, sing GG’s praises, and recruit converts on this new platform, as “Twitter’s 140 character limit makes it difficult to have a meaningful conversation”.

Because it’s totally the character limit that’s the problem, not the fact that their arguments have been a transparent attempt to legitimize harassment since Day One.

Their call to action and their operations manual demonstrate remarkable disdain for Tumblr’s userbase, which are addressed like gullible children. “A normal tumblr user won’t read this shit,” they scoff. “Find concise ways of presenting your argument.” Content producers are encouraged to “analyze tumblr” and emulate its culture, spinning GamerGate’s oft-defensive, oft-sexist, oft-racist material into something  “informative whilst being inviting or friendly”; “homely or nostalgic”.

No, don’t acknowledge the fact that GamerGate singles out and attacks people, particularly women! “Only bring names up factually, don’t address the person as a cause, address their actions as a symptom of something worse.”

No, GamerGate isn’t about duping innocent people into supporting their bullshit accusations! “Identifying and explaining the consequences of corruption is the most important factor in convincing an impartial faction. And I mean fucking legitimate consequences, mid to long term consequences. Nothing that will make you seem delusional or seem unfounded.”

No, GamerGate isn’t a movement! It’s not even a consumer revolt! That phase wore off! We’re past that now! “Like all other ‘Gates’ before it, Gamergate is an event- namely a scandal. GG uncovered irrefutable evidence of corruption in gaming journalism.”

Never mind that no such evidence exists! That doesn’t actually matter! “The media organizations involved, instead of addressing those legitimate concerns and firing those involved, went on a monthlong rampage against their readers claiming that ‘Gamers were Dead’”. Never mind that those articles were addressing the fact that we don’t have to accommodate the toxic elements within gaming subculture, when we’re coming to embrace a diverse audience! GamerGate takes offense to that, for some reason!

And remember, kids! “Have some fucking manners.”

Fuck off, GamerGate. We already know who you are, we know what you represent. You’re the worst of our subculture, rallied under a single banner. Your “movement” is garbage. Everyone knows it.
